Having worked closely with Valero and the Texaco team over the last four years, we were delighted to be invited to be one of the key sponsors for the first UK Valero Children’s Benefit Golf Classic held on the Celtic Manor 2010 Ryder Cup Course, in June this year (2014).
The Benefit has run for several years in the US, but this was the inaugural UK event. The Benefit is set up to support four separate children’s charities and, the combined total raised on the day was a magnificent £60,800.
As sponsors, not only did we get the privelege of sponsoring one of the holes, but we also hosted one of the teams. Barry Wyeth and I, along with Valero’s Andrew Cox and Andy Kelsey, scored an creditable 45 points between us. However, looking at the final scorecard, it seems that the taking part was altogether more important than the winning as far as we were concerned! We like to think we selflessly sacrificed victory in order to give others a better opportunity on the day.
